Wind stepped onto the sand beside her.

The girl with the yellow kite looked from Sophie to Wind.

“Why are you wet?”

Wind pushed his hair out of his eyes.

“The letting-out part,” he said. “You wouldn’t believe what happened.”

“What?”

“Well. We had to go beyond the reef.”

The children gathered closer.

Sophie looked at him.

That much was true.

“And Ocean said we needed room.”

That was true too.

Wind spread his arms to show them how much room.

“So the wind wouldn’t destroy the island when we uncorked it.”

Sophie slipped past him and went to fetch her kite.
