Far away, Sophie was miserable. But not hopeless.

Because she knew one thing: Wind had his paipo. And a boy with a board is a boy the ocean has to argue with.

Again and again, she and her dad Pierre sailed their outrigger out along the Pineapple Waterway. Long days. Hard water, sometimes. And near one island they saw a lot of Makos — silver fins, more than anywhere else in the sea.

Pierre went — because Sophie asked. Because he trusted Wind; the boy was truly sturdy. And because, truth be told, Pierre loved this: flying his outrigger over the swells with his daughter, exploring island after island, seeing new faces.

But when they asked — Has anyone seen a lost paipo? Or a boy, with a name like Wind?

people shook their heads. It wasn't a good story to tell.
