Near the bottom, the side of the run curved up like half of a halfpipe.

Wind played there every run. He launched high off the wall, spun 180s and 360s, and landed them back on the run in bursts of snow powder.

One time, Sophie stopped beside a little jump at the edge of the run. Beyond it was an opening full of deep, untouched snow.

Wind looked at the jump. Then at Sophie. Then he gathered some speed.

Whoosh.

Up, and over, and around. For a moment his skis were above his head, Sophie was below him, and he was looking at her upside down. Then the mountain came back the right way up. He landed in a burst of powder, still on both skis.

“WOW!” screamed a kid on the chairlift high above.

“Did you see that? Did you see that?” The kid bounced so hard that the whole chair swung, and his skis knocked against the skis of the man beside him.

“Show-off,” said Sophie. But she was grinning too.

Wind was enjoying himself.

A little too much.
