Wind — the demigod of the islands, the wind, and the kite. His hair shines gold in the sun, the ocean argues with him, and he could never resist a dare. Perhaps a demigod who boasts he can out-surf Māui is Māui, which is the joke that Sophie and the sea decided to answer.

Sophie — the goddess of wisdom: not book-wisdom, but the quick, clever, cunning kind. Watch and think is the whole of her. She and Wind are two tricksters, matched — which is why she was the only one who never gave up, and the only one who could read two burned words and know exactly what they meant. Perhaps she shows one of her faces as Metis — in the old Greek stories.

Pierre — the great ocean itself. Of course he loves to sail. Of course he believed there was still a boy out there to find. The sea always knows what the sea is holding. Was he perhaps an Oceanus — the eldest of the Titans, the father of all rivers and seas, in the tale of the Greeks? Perhaps.
